Chimamanda Adichie Gives Parisian 10 Lessons On Feminism

From posting this blog I have learnt that people from Paris are called Parisians :)

To a Nigerian father, Adichie’s advice is:
“Raise your daughter and your son the same way. Either you keep both of them home so that they can’t go out late or you allow both of them to go out late. Raise them not thinking about gender. Don’t thinks she’s a girl therefore she should do this. I think we should just think this is a bright child, therefore…”
    To a Brother:
“Don’t think of your sister as your property. Don’t think of your sister as a person whose life you can control. To a brother I would say think of your sister as having equal rights to you.”
    To a young Nigerian woman:
“Never ever apologise for being who you are.”
To The President of a western country:
“Stop thinking that gender problems only exist in Africa. It exists in your own country too.”
    To The Pope:
“First I would say I love you and then I would say please try and give women more roles. I think that women priests should be allowed in the catholic church. There are women who are full of faith and who want to serve god as priests.”
    To Hillary Clinton:
“Go Hillary! I think she’s going to be the next president of the United States.”
    To Simone de Beauvoir:
“What happened with you and Sartre again? I would say love is a feminist issue.”
To a teacher who insists that feminism is not African
“You have a lot to learn.”
    To Women:
“Buy very good lipstick. [laughs] If you like lipstick. More seriously I’d say it’s not just about lipstick but to love yourself. Do what feels like you.”
    To Herself:
“Do better. I do want to be better. As I become older there are things I want to be better at. I want to be better at forgiving people.”

5 Things I've Learnt From Dating.

5 Things I've Learnt From Dating.
Getting into relationships could seem like hard work or a do or die affair in an age with so much social media presence and people picking up their validations from a sense of being loved.
I’ll be sharing some of the things i've learnt form dating all of which are pulled out from interactions with different age groups and people from different works of life.
    1
    •      Date someone you can’t stand: Am playing here with comparisons but I think at times you should date someone you cannot stand, someone who totally irks just because. This just helps you to know your limit and helps you get a better grasp of yourself and what not to deal with in the nearest future. Dating someone you can’t stand stretches you helping you to know you can actually live with any kind of person.

Love that lasts are the kind that grows and not the one that is always high up.

    •    Date someone for his or her money: A popular song says (Whether na 1naira na one million baby you got me). Here am telling you to date a guy for his 1million my dear girl, date a guy you know of his financial capacity don’t get carried away with the love alone. Financial capacity is the main ingredient of any love potion.

This is not to say that you date someone solely for their money.

Also you could try dating a woman that has money as a guy believing that she will spoil you. There is nothing wrong in dating a woman who is more financially more capable than you.

    •         Date someone you don’t plan to marry: Try this out and date someone of an opposite religion, different tribe or even so a temperament which you are not compatible with from the popular book on temperaments. I for one like to put Nigerian parents under pressure so you could date a guy or a girl form the tribe or religion your parents will never approve of. This will help to foster room for people being more accommodative of other religions and tribe. Take for instance you go to study in faraway Australia away from home wouldn’t it be nice to date someone while you are there studying (Remember! All work and no play makes Jack/Jill dull)

    •             You are entitled to nothing: This is a really superb idea when going into a relationship being able to understand that it is just a relationship and not an entitlement or some right. To be a participant of this you must learn to manage your expectations.

    •            Be your worst self: Learn to be your worst self. Show your other half or date partner your worst side, your weakness.

Present your worst self during all the days when you have butterflies so your partner is not necessarily deceived or lured by what won’t last.

Here's a disclaimer: This post was written out of trying not to follow the norm at all times. If dating means commitment to you make sure you do go for it... I for one wants just as indicated below.

Sheryl Sandberg To Her Younger Self On Starting Out

Find work you love. When you believe in what you are doing, you can combine passion with contribution – and that is a true gift. Keep trying and you will find what you love to do… and once you do, you will crush it.

Believe you can do anything. This is important for everyone and especially for women. Don’t let anyone tell you can’t have both a meaningful professional career and a fulfilling personal life. When you hear someone say you can't do something, know that you can and start figuring out how. Ask yourself, “What would I do if I weren’t afraid?”

There is no straight path to where you are going. If you try to draw that line you will not just get it wrong, but you will miss big opportunities. As Pattie Sellers of Fortune Magazine says, careers are not ladders but jungle gyms.  You don't have to have it all figured out. I recommend adopting two concurrent goals:

    1.      A long-term dream: It doesn't have to be realistic or even specific. For example, you might say you want to work in a specific field, travel the world, and have more free time. Even a vague goal can provide direction.

    2.      An 18-month plan: Set personal goals for what you want to learn in the next year and a half. Ask yourself how you can improve and what you're afraid to do (that's usually the thing you should try).
